FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., This is the final weekend for thousands of billfish anglers across the world to compete in The Billfish Foundation's 21st annual Tag and Release competition The 2010 - 2011 season ends on Oct. 31st.
Every year, TBF receives thousands of tag reports and release records from angling competitors fishing the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans.
"The data collected by these conservation minded people hold important biological and socio-economic data and illustrate that conservation pays," said Peter Chaibongsai, TBF's Director of Science and Policy "As a thank you, TBF annually recognizes these captains, mates, and anglers, including youth and ladies during TBF's Annual Tag & Release Awards Ceremony held during the Miami International Boat Show each February."
The competition has over 50 total categories classified by billfish species, ocean, and whether the fish were tagged, or released untagged. TBF will continue to receive tag records and release cards for the 2010 - 2011 season at TBF headquarters in Ft. Lauderdale through the deadline of Nov. 8th
TBF's 22nd annual competition begins on Nov 1, 2011 and runs through to Oct. 31, 2012.
"Throughout the year on our website and Facebook fan page, TBF offers regular updates to the competition," added Chaibongsai, "letting captains, mates, and anglers know who are in the Top 5 for each category."
Celebrating its 25th year, TBF is the only non-profit organization dedicated solely to the conservation and enhancement of billfish populations worldwide through scientific research, education and advocacy. TBF's comprehensive network of members and supporters includes anglers, captains, mates, tournament directors, clubs and sportfishing businesses. By coordinating efforts and speaking with one voice, TBF is able to work for solutions that are good for billfish and not punitive to recreational anglers.
