Walmart FLW Tour Swings Into Summer On Kentucky Lake
|
MURRAY, Ky. - The Walmart FLW Tour on Kentucky Lake presented by Kellogg's will visit Murray, Ky., June 11-14 for the seventh tournament of the season. Hosted by the Murray Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Marshall County Tourist Commission, the tournament will feature the nation's top bass anglers fishing for top awards up to $125,000 cash in the Pro Division and up to $25,000 cash in the Co-angler Division.
"This one's going to be good," said Prevacid 24 Hour pro Dan Morehead of Paducah, Ky. "Everything is shaping up to be really good."
Morehead said the spring high waters have receded and Kentucky Lake is at normal summer pool. Morehead said the conditions and his 17 years of experience on the lake have boosted his confidence for the event.
"There's been a little lack of current lately, which as far as I'm concerned is good," Morehead said. "The fish are moving out and life is looking large.
"The water's got a little color to it," Morehead added. "I wouldn't call it muddy. It reminds me of back in the heyday of the early 90s. And when we get lots of color like that it keeps the fish from going really, really deep. I like what I'm seeing. It's going to allow me to fish a couple of patterns that I really enjoy that when the water's really clear don't work as well."
Morehead said the "hometown curse" that seems to affect anglers on their home waters during tournaments doesn't have him too worried, and the bite should be the famous off-shore Kentucky Lake ledge bite that Morehead is so familiar with.
"If you fish patterns instead of memories then I don't think it's a curse," Morehead said. "You just have to be careful and let the fish tell you their pattern.
"There were several guys down here prefishing before the off-limits period, but the fish were just getting out on the ledges," Morehead added. "I don't feel like those guys learned anything. Whatever they did learn won't apply when they come back. So, yeah, I'm kind of optimistic. I think I've got a hometown advantage that a whole bunch of those guys won't."
Morehead said dragging jigs and deep crankbaits will be the name of the game for the event.
"There might be a few fish caught shallow on a small shad spawn," Morehead said. "And we are going to be fishing during a full moon, so I won't say there won't be a few fish shallow possibly spawning because it's been a crazy year this year, but it won't be won that way. It will be won deep, no doubt."
Anglers will take off from Kentucky Dam Marina located at 466 Marina Drive in Gilbertsville, Ky., at 6 Thursday and Friday mornings and Ken-Lake State Park Marina located at 542 Ken-Lake Road in Hardin, Ky., at 6 Saturday and Sunday mornings. Thursday and Friday's weigh-ins will also be held at Kentucky Dam Marina beginning at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday's final weigh-ins will be held at the Murray State University - CFSB Center located at 1401 State Route 121 N. in Murray beginning at 4 p.m.
