Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Ky Dam - 360.15 Surface Temperature - 48
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 350.35 Surface Temperature - 48
Both lakes are one foot over summer pool. Kentucky Lake is stained. Lake Barkley is muddy. Both lakes have wood debris from the
rising waters so be careful when running your boat. Both lakes continued to rise this past week as the lakes were being held back due to the Ohio River
being in flood stage. The lakes started dropping some yesterday and the forecast is for a continued slow drawdown. The NWS is reporting that the Ohio River
will crest around Tuesday or Wednesday this next week. If this happens I would expect the lakes to continue to be pulled down. We have rain in the forecast
here for today and Saturday and then again early next week. Depending on how much rain we receive, this forecast could be changed. The rising waters seems
to have scattered the bass as normally happens when we have rapidly rising waters. I would classify the Largemouth bite as fair with fish being taken from
the deep main lake points to the backs of the creeks and bays. The bite the past couple of days has been one or two fish here and then move on to another
spot to find another fish. As the water levels continue to drop I would expect the bass to move more back to the deeper areas around the mouths of the bays
and the main lake. Our water temperatures are still below normal. My past records show that our water temperatures are about 5 degrees below what they
normally are this time of year.
Largemouth Bass: Largemouth are being taken on main lake points as well as secondary points and creek channel banks in the
creeks and bays. These fish are being taken on suspending jerkbaits, slow rolled crankbaits, jigs and shaky head worms.
Smallmouth Bass: Smallmouth are being taken on main lake points and first secondary points in the bays on suspending jerkbaits,
slow rolled crankbaits, jigs and shaky head worms. The Smallmouth bite has been overall slow but a few good single fish are being reported.
Here are some of the more productive lures reported this week: Lucky Craft pointers in aurora black and american shad, Rapala
Xrap in black/silver and clown, Rapala shad raps in original crawdad and black/silver, Last Cast finesse jigs in green pumpkin and black/brown and various
brands of shaky head worms in green pumpkin.
Crappie: The Crappie bite has slowed with the fluctuating water levels but fish are still being taken in 12-20 ft of water
around the mouths of the bays over brush piles and deep stake beds by vertically fishing with small minnows and jigs. A few reports of Crappie being taken
in shallower water around wood cover on minnows and by casting small jigs have been received but the fish are reported to be scattered.
The warmer weather the past few days brought out a lot of anglers on the lakes to enjoy the nice weather and the early spring
fishing. Our spring fishing is about to jump into high gear here and I would like to welcome all the folks and recommend that they visit The Cabin Bait and
Tackle located on U.S. 62 in Kuttawa and Fisherman's Headquarters located on U.S. 68 in Draffenville. Both these great tackle shops are fully stocked
with the latest in name brand and custom fishing lures and tackle. You can find that personal service there from folks that know fishing that you cannot
find in the big chain stores. For those folks that may need some service on their boats or are looking for a new or used boat you will not find a better
place in the heartland than Jet-A-Marina located on U.S. 62 in Calvert City. The folks at Jet-A-Marina are known all over the heartland for their great
service and first class line of boats and boating equipment.
Last summer I mentioned that I had installed a new Evinrude Etec HO on my boat and would keep you apprised on how the new engine
was performing. I now have over 270 hours on this engine and it has given me flawless performance. I have had no major problems requiring service. So far
this engine has lived up to its reputation of being one of the best of the best. If you are considering a new engine for your boat you should stop by
Jet-A-Marina and check out the new Etec engines.
If you are in need of a bass guide for a fun bass fishing trip, tournament preparation, lake familiarization or technique
