Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation Distributes Free Marine Education Posters in Florida Schools
|
DAVIE, FL In support of its marine awareness and education efforts, the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation is distributing a free poster for display in high and middle school science classrooms, and elementary school media centers. The poster exhibits colorful, real-life depictions of key marine animals and plants against a deep blue backdrop.
The objective is to use the attractive, eye-catching poster to spark interest in marine science education as well as awareness of ocean conservation needs. So far, thousands of posters have been distributed in South Florida, Central Florida, Northeast Florida, the Gulf coast and the Panhandle.
"Our goal is to have at least one copy of this poster in every school across the state," said Antonio Fins, executive director of the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation. "It's a great tool for teachers to use in the classroom to spark interest among students in science, and marine science specifically."
Just this month, 800 posters were handed out to Miami-Dade Public Schools. In appreciation, the Miami-Dade School Board gave the GHOF a proclamation, which was presented on Jan. 16 to GHOF President Steve Stock and Executive Director Antonio Fins by School Board Member Raquel Regalado. Previously, the largest distribution of posters to a single school district was the shipment of 500 delivered to the Orange County school district in October.
That said, public, charter and private schools are all eligible to receive a poster.
The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation funded the poster giveaway with money generated by sales of the 2012 Guy Harvey scratch-off lottery ticket game. Guy Harvey lottery proceeds funded a host of other education-related efforts, including the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Florida Youth Conservation Camp Network. Florida Lottery officials called the game one of the most successful in the state's history, and a follow-up Guy Harvey lottery game is scheduled for 2013.
