Trout in Alabama
There aren't many places you can catch cold-water trout in Alabama, but the Sipsey River below Smith Lake Dam is one of these, thanks to regular stocking by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. According to Brandon Jackson, who has a fly shop at the intersection of the river and State Road 69 and who functions as a sort of unofficial river keeper, another load of trout went into the river last week, and should provide fast action for the next several weeks. These are little guys, under a foot long for the most part, but it's a rare opportunity to catch trout without a drive to the mountains-most anglers use canned corn or live worms, but small spinners and wet flies also work well according to Jackson. He'll be holding a meeting of Trout Unlimited at his shop-which is well worth a visit on its own-on July 28 at 1 p.m.
