It seems that most Musky fisherman are in overkill mode most of the time. Me included.
I've got some 175# test, 12 inch solid wire leader's with 200# snaps and swivel's. I use them mostly on my big jerkbait's and in off colored water. I've actually caught alot of fish off of these type leader's. For the little rattle traps and smaller twitch bait's, I've been twisting my own leaders for awhile. I like the 50#-75# solid wire for those smaller bait's. Sometime's I put a ball bearing swivel or sampo swivel on one end then I just make a loop and direct tie it the the split ring on the lure. A good size Musky, say a 40 incher on one of these little leader's is pretty much all you will get out of it, maybe two. You really have to watch for kink's and bend's on the light stuff. If you hook into MOBY she will make use of the slightest kink in you equipment.
As for color, I'm not really concerned about color that much. I've got some black leader's, bronze leader's, even stainless colored leader's and have got fish on all of them.. When she is ready to eat, she has tunnel vision and will eat the prop on your trolling motor if she is hot!!
I should be on the lake!!!!!!!!!!!
